Silent Service TV Series

Postby Tom Dougherty » Mon Oct 08, 2012 12:10 pm

The 1950's TV Series "Silent Service" is now available on DVD, with a direct transfer from the original 16 mm film stock. This results in a very clear video presentation.
The good news: two seasons worth are available. The bad news: they are extremely pricey! One year is $149, both seasons are $298.

For those of you not familiar with the series, these shows were reenactments of famous WWII submarine stories. They featured then little known actors such as Russsell Johnson, Leonord Nimoy, Mike Connors, and DeForest Kelley. The realism was heightened by actual use of combat footage from the Navy. The series was driven by Rear Admiral Thomas M. Dykers, who skippered the Jack during WWII. The Navy loaned him the Gato class U.S.S. Sawfish (a Naval Reserve Training ship) for the interior filming of several episodes.

This represents a lot of negotiations & work on the part of John Clear and others to get these episodes onto DVD. Normally (having seen this when I was seven years old), I would run right out and order them. But, I've got to say, the high price has put me off for now.
