Recovering a Secret Spy Satellite Capsule from 16,400 feet

Postby Tom Dougherty » Wed Sep 12, 2012 7:46 pm

http://www.foia.cia.gov/hexagon-capsule.asp

Describes the attempt by Trieste II bathyscaphe (actually it was really an all new Trieste III, but was given the cover name of Trieste II) to grapple a recovery capsule with film that had been ejected from the Hexagon next generation reconn satellite. The parachute failed and the photo "bucket" ended up 16,000+ feet down in the Pacific.

Wow, that is too cool, Tom. I'd love to read more about the different Triestes in my favorite submarine hobby magazine!

Here's the link to the CIA's flickr photostream about this mission: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ciagov/sets/72157630990648818/with/7773820852/.
Warm regards,
