New member here - we're a father-son team of model shipbuilders who live near the site of John Holland's first submarine base, in New Suffolk, NY.
We recently spent the month of November converting a PVC sewer pipe into a 1/96 replica of USS Virginia
. On the day after Thanksgiving, with her paint still wet, we gave her a shakedown cruise in the very waters that Holland tested his Holland IV
submarine - the waters of Peconic Bay. She's a dynamic-diver, driven by a 9.6v electric motor with reduction belt drive, and measures 48" in length.
Below, please find video of her shakedown cruise (top) and a longer, in-depth video detailing her construction (bottom).
Hope you enjoy! After so many years seeing the Submariners Memorial practically across the street from us, it's nice to finally be a member of this board.
