Jules Verne NAUTILUS in 72 scale --- 4th try

Postby modelnut » Thu Jul 14, 2011 4:51 pm

Instead of carving foam I am basing my sub on the card model. Image

I had it blown up 130% so that with fiberglass it should come out in 72nd scale.
Spent yesterday putting together the forward and middle section.

I have half of the aft section done but no pics yet.

The paper hull is nearly complete. I've reinforced the interior with cardboard bulkheads to prevent it collapsing when the fiberglass is applied.

Here are the two sections ready for final assembly>

But it seems to me that the kit's proportions are off. When the kit is assembled it will be 80cm long and 10.5cm in diameter. But the Verne's NAUTILUS is 70 meters long and 8 meters in diameter. A diameter of 10.5cm would work for a hull length of 91.9cm. So to set the kit right I need to add 11.9cm to the length.

I will construct the extension tomorrow and see what I see. Then it will be time to lay on the fiber glass. 8)

Most of you have seen me post again and again about building the NAUTILUS. I guess you're getting a bit bored with it by now. How many years have I been at it now???

But this time I really think I've got a shot at finishing.

Here is my goal:

Thats great!
I might try your plan in maybe a copper flashing material.

Here is the hull completely assembled. The white section you see in the center is the 17cm I had to add to bring her up to 70 meters in 72 scale. I guess the paper kit is not quite accurate.

The SKIPJACK you see behind my NAUTILUS is supposed to be in the same scale. But the SKIP model at 105cm long only comes out to 75.6 meters. The real SKIP was 77. My N measures at 70.5cm. She is .5cm too long while the SKIP is about 2cm too short. Oh well. Nobody's perfect.

It's a bit crazy when you think it --- just how close Jules Verne came in his design! They are very nearly the same submarine.

It is Ok to stop working on your model as long as you start again!

Just don't stop breathing and try to start again!
Keep up the good work.

I hoped to start laying on the glass this morning. But I worked overtime on last nights graveyard shift. I've been up a long long time. Maybe this afternoon. Depends on how coherent I feel.

If you look far far down that page you will see two designs I've offered. That site and I are old old friends.

I've done it.

I've applied the first layer of fiberglass!

Here is the paper hull covered in duck tape. Another builder did this and said it made pulling the hull from the buck just that much easier. ( I figured it couldn't hurt. )

Here is the first layer of fiberglass curing. There are probably voids and bubbles. But this is my first try. I will give her a good sanding and apply another layer tomorrow.

Building your first boat is a learning experience. I am sure I have a lot more to learn yet.

modelnut,
Thank you for your posts. What have you learned so far about using fiberglass? I see that you wrapped your initial shape in Duct Tape, is that to help prevent the solvents from attaching your foam?

No foam this time. I just happened to buy a paper model of the NAUTILUS that a friend pointed out to me. The shape was almost perfect. So why reinvent the wheel?
I took the PDF file to my friendly neighborhood print shop and had it enlarged to the proper percentage.

I got the idea for the duck tape from another build. The builder covered his foam buck in duck tape so that the fiberglass could be pulled without having to chip out the foam or melt it into goo.

That wrinkled texture is actually pretty cool. Very reminiscent of the SeaQuest from the TV series! Are you going to get rid of those or try to fill them?

Being that the underlying model was paper,, could you not have simply left off the duct tape and sprayed the paper model with silicone?
