Ictineo-II hull

Postby Pedro Gómez » Sat Mar 14, 2009 4:01 pm

:D Hi guys:

I show you some pictures taken of the hull, after, de-molding, of the 1:10 Ictineo-II.
This proyect is being carry out for a friend modeler, Antoni Barata, and me.
The difficulties of this proyect, shared between us, make affordable them.
The woks are divided: I did the CAD design, working on the original Monturiol’s plans (courtesy of Barcelona Shipping Museum), composites works, engines and gadgets, and RC stuff. Antoni is a Museum-master craftsman- , and is skillful in wooden and metal works.

The hull is made of epoxy (12 hrs) - fiberglass

The sub is drived by a “Twin Launch Stuart Turner” with air compressed.

This year is the 150th anniversary of the first public appearance of the Monturiol’s Ictineo-I, in Barcelona harbor in 1859, and we hope to have finished the work for September, when the Museum make the Celebration.

I’ll post some pictures with the advance of the works

Greetings

Pedro

very nice work. I take it this is the underpinnings to the hull, and you plan to clad the exterior with wood?

Ictineo-II wooden hull

Postby Pedro Gómez » Thu Mar 19, 2009 9:21 am

:D Yes, this is the idea.

The final look will be like this picture (a static model wich is in the Museum).

There are more images in Photobucket. Search for Ictineo-II.

The plank design will be different as the picture, because there wasn't trees of 17 m high!!!. to make entire planks. Really, the planks were aprox. 25-30 cm wide and 1,60 m long. There are only one picture (see it above), a "daguerreotype" of the Ictineo-II before launching, and it is possible see the original layout of the planks.
See it:

In the bow: Narciso Monturiol

Ictineo-II advances

Postby Pedro Gómez » Fri Nov 26, 2010 2:50 am

:) Hi Guys:

I took a long time to Post again.

I'll show you the state in the building of the Ictineo-II.

At this moment, the engine is at 75%, the cylinder block is finished, the bench with the bearings too, the crank rods too. Now I'm lathering the cams for the distribution. From the end, the main landmarks are the crankshaft, and the Stephenson distribution. The parts for the Air Compressed supply are in the stuff box.

About the hull, the wooden works are finished, the planks, the bow, the windows, and the hatch tower. Now we are making the copper cover in the stern. Also the 38 portholes (19 each hull).

All parts to being cutted by laser are designed. So, the stern post and the propeller will be easy to do.

Greetings

Pedro Gómez

Nice job, Pedro. We have to make something similar about Mr. Isaac Peral, ship, the real first submarine in the world, though not many people doesn't know it. I took some pictures of the sub some weeks ago in Cartagena, and are seriously thinking about building this submarine.

Take care.
Juan Carlos.
