A way to access at least some of the old forum.

Postby Boss subfixer » Mon Aug 06, 2007 8:07 pm

I just recently and literally stumbled on to a way to view at least part of the old SC forum and website. After running it by Jeff LaRue and Tim Smalley and getting the go ahead here it is for those that are interested. In the interest of giving credit where it is due here is the post that led me to this find by Jonnie 2ndGen Ron11 PT175 from ptboats.org forum board.

I greatly missed the OLD board because I thought it would always be there—so many good references to sites and info and contacts. But you CAN still access some of it for that info. I wanted the reference to a sound effects site that had vintage recordings you could preview/listen to (free) of PT Boats underway (PT sharp turn at fast speed, idling to full speed, PT boat pass by, docking maneuvers etc.) The recordings were awesome to hear. I didn’t save it. Now I have it back, if interested the URL is: http://www.sounddogs.com/ShowMessage.asp?Code=NSC
Just use the quick search, and put in PT Boat.

I accessed the old message board by using the internet archive site: http://web.archive.org/collections/web/advanced.html
You specify any old web address and a date (nothing newer than 2005) I used Nov 11 2005 and the old message board bookmark:
http://www.ptboats.org/cgi-local/index.cgi
as the “find” request.

Got the old board Feb 2004 thru Dec 2005 with over 2500 messages-- most every reference I had wanted to find was there. If there’s something or someone you want to find again, go back and get it!

The above pretty much tells the tale, however (there is always a however) it's not perfect. There are some dead links so not everything comes up, but if you play around sometimes they will. I suggest that if you find an archive that is pretty complete you bookmark it.
All you have to do is highlight and copy this link then paste into your browser and it will take you what I have bookmarked at this point. If you just click on the highlighted part of the link only it will take you to square one and you will have to type in the old SC web address. (www.subcommittee.com) in the search bar. http://web.archive.org/web/*hh_/subcommittee.com/
Anyway, there it is. Happy hunting and good luck.
Feel free to keep the rest of us updated if you find something there that works really well.

I thought everyone knew about the OLP (archive.org) anyway if you want even older stuff

http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://wolfsong.com/SubCommittee/

will allow you to get at it

Don,

Excellent find!

Some background for folks:

...it's the wolfsong/SubCommittee content that is no longer to be found in this forum.

When we converted from the custom written forum environment to the ikonboard forum software we had no means to import the content of the old forum. However, when we recently moved from ikonboard to the current (phpBB) forum we were able to retain all of the content.

Hope this helps,

Jeff

...if I understand the question correctly, all the ikonboard based forum content came across with us to the phpBB forum currently being used.

Is that the question you are asking?

Ahhh.....then that information is not available as far as I know. A number of years back, someone had volunteered to try to take the old wolfsong-based forum content and convert it into something that we could access.....but that person never responded back with anything after having been sent the raw information.

That's now so long in the past that I'd hazard a guess that the information is either no longer useful or has been recreated here.
