White powder in photos

Postby cporc » Wed Feb 27, 2008 11:54 pm

The "powder" appears to be reflections caused by the light source hitting glossy spots on the model. Try diffusing it with a piece of tissue paper or paper towel between the light source and the subject. You might also try bouncing the light off of a white piece of paper.
If you are using on (or off) camera flash you can tape a piece of tissue over the flash lens, take your photos, then remove it for normal use.

Here are pictures of the Aft Torpedo room. The sausages hanging are made from Soder lead. I am still working on this section. The figures are all modified and some scratchbuilding required.

more pictures of the aft torpedo room. I JUST FOUND OUT WHAT ARE THE WHITE POWDER ON SOME OF THE PICTURES. It is sheet styrene particules, you can't see them thru the naked I but the camera does capture them. I will be using my airbrush to air them out.

I just started to build the 3.7cm gun. I have the plans but not enough pictures to detail it. If you have pictures that you can email me or let me know of a book where I can find pictures. I will be very appreciative. I will be adding pictures as I progress.
Thank you, Hugo Garcia

I just finished scratchbuilding my 1/32 3.7cm gun. Here are the pictures of the not painted model. I am using a tissue paper in front of the camera hoping to get better pictures.

I used sheet styrene and used figerglass fishing rod (tip) for the canon. The green part is a piece I bought from the Dollar Store called party flavors, its for children to look into and see many designs

If you aren't able to shoot outdoors (in the open shade is best for product photography) using a little tissue in front of the flash as a diffuser- especially if it is several inches or more away from the flash - will help soften the light and make it look more natural.

You might also want to pick a neutral background - not too dark and not too white. That will help separate the item you are shooting from the bkgrnd.

Automatic cameras see a black background and try to compensate for the darkness by making the picture lighter - sometimes WAY too light. A white background shot taken with an automatic camera will often come out looking too dark because the camera sees all that white and tries to compensate - making the shot an 18% average grey.

Not sure about the spots in some of the shots - looks like white dust from something.

Nice modeling by the way! :D
