Type XXIII: wooden walkway on deck?

Static Submarine modelers unite!

Postby rmfield » Mon Oct 02, 2006 10:35 am

I see that some modellers have built Type XXIII kits with a wooden walkway on the hull. Was this a stowed feature, or was it present all the time? I have the ICM 1/144 kit, which doesn't have this feature, and am considering whether to add it.

TIA for any info!

Certainly nothing permanent, and nothing used while underway. Maybe something used by the shipyard to make work easier?

I have seen quite a few XXIII photos, but I do not remember anything like a wooden walkway on the hull. Where was it supposed to be located?

it's located foreward of the conning tower, usually deployed in 2 separate sections. It's not a permanent fixture, and seems to be used more often than not when the boat was pierside. I've also got some photos of it on what looks to be a training run.

See "Vom Original zum Modell: Uboottyp XXIII" for photos of the boat with and without this decking.

Personally, I like the look of the model with the decking added; I wouldn't use the chain railing and stanchions on a working (R/C) version though.

I have had a look at my copy of "Vom Original zum Modell: Uboottyp XXIII", and I have not found a photo where the boat was out of port with that decking. The one that Sam posted is the best, and the boat is at rest or going very slowly, and definitely in port.
Summary @rmfield: if your model is static, the decking will add interest - if it will ever see the pond, I would leave it off.
