Static Display Nautilus - with working irises!

Nautilus, Seaview, and more

Here's my static Nautilus model with full LED lighting and fully operational irises. A full writeup can be found here: http://www.rc-sub.com/nautilus.html

The model is a Scott Brodeen kit that I got from Custom Replicas. Cost of the kit was $400 plus about $150 for the irises and miscellaneous little parts. Buildup was fairly straightforward, with no surprises. The lighting kit was purchased from VoodooFX, but after getting the kit (mostly out of curiousity), doing up the lighting system from scratch would save you tons of money and involve very little extra work.

I did up a scratch-built salon kit for this model as well. I admit that I rushed through it a bit, and I think if I were to do it again, the next version would be a bit more 'polished'. The overall effect, however, is very good. From outside, you can glimpse the infamous salon organ and the fountain through the salon windows.

The irises were the most fun part to do up. Actuation was accomplished through the use of fishing line and brass stock. A hidden key actuates the mechanism. Both irises actuate together.
