Now that I look at it again I think that you are right Kevin, It looks like your Akula. Only problem is where is Charlie with his tugboat? :D The bright sharp image tells me that it is a recent picture so............. Anybody else?

I too think it's an Akula (Project 971 Shuka-B)....the sail-forward hull geometry looks like a perfect match. The flood vents that can be seen also seem to match. If we could see the bow rescue buoy, I think it would be a 'lock'.

p.s. Mark, since you posted this image...do you know the answer?

Nope I dont know for sure, the website that I got the picture off of identified it only as a Russian submarine(very helpful). Wayne Frey, where are you?

Ok! Our next contestant on "NAME THAT SUB"!
Image All I could get from the website is a screen capture. The russian text says that at the time of the photo it was a test submarine BS-555 somewhere in the Baltic sea on Sea trials.

A quick internet search shows: Project 1840 'LIMA' class submarine, which apparently was an experimental diesel-electric sub.

It's the Sarov (Project 20120), diesel electric with an auxiliary nuclear reactor...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarov_class_submarine
http://www.nti.org/db/submarines/russia/index.html search for Project 20120
