ARKHANGELSK, Nov. 22 — The event “symbolized the end of major works and the submarine was preparing for a test voyage"- said the spokesman.

The project began in 1996. The construction of two similar submarines, the Alexander Nevskiy and the Vladimir Monomakh, began in 2004 and 2006 correspondingly. The submarines belong to the Borei series. They were designed at the Rubin Naval Bureau in St. Petersburg.

According to open sources, the Borei submarines are equipped with advanced radio-electronic systems and have low noise characteristics. They will carry the Bulava missile system and 12 intercontinental ballistic missiles with solid fuel and splitting warheads. The submarines are 170 meters long and 13.5 meters wide. They can dive to the depth of 450 meters and have the crew of 107.

In the opinion of the Russian Navy, the Borei series will make up the backbone of the naval-based nuclear forces of Russia in the 21st century. (PNA/Itar-Tass)
