OFFICIALS AT THE NAVY SUBMARINE BASE OFFICIALLY RETIRED THE NUCLEAR-POWERED DEEP SEA RESEARCH AND RESCUE SUBMARINE, THE NR-1.

CEREMONMIES WERE HELD TODAY (-- FRIDAY --) AT THE BASE IN GROTON.

NAVY SPOKESMAN MC-1 STEPHEN MYERS SAYS THE SHIP TOOK PART IN SOME VERY HIGH PROFILE OPERATIONS DURING IT 40 YEARS IN SERVICE.

IT SEARCHED FOR PARTS OF THE SPACE SHUTTLE CHALLENGER IN 1986. THE BOAT SOUGHT PARTS OF EGYPT AIR FLIGHT 990 OFF THE COAST OF NEW ENGLAND.

THE SUB HAS EXPLORED SHIPWRECKS, INLCUDING THE USS MONITOR.

THE SUB WAS DESIGNED TO MANEUVER CLOSE TO THE SEABED, AND TO CARRY OUT UNDERWATER SEARCH AND RESCUE MISSIONS.

OFFICIALS SAY IT WILL TAKE ABOUT A YEAR TO FULLY RETIRE THE VESSEL.
