The Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast, will complete construction of Russia’s first fourth-generation multi-purpose submarine in 2010. The vessel has been under construction since 1993.
-Sevmash has no problems with the construction of this vessel, financing is coming, yard director Nikolay Kalistratov said to RIA Novosti. –The vessel will be handed over to the Navy in 2010, he underlined.

The project 985 “Yasen” is 120 meter long, has a top speed of 30 knots, a crew of 90 and can dive to 600 meter depths. In Nato-language, the vessel is named “Graney. Russia plans to construct a series of five such vessels.

-This is first vessel in the history of the Navy which is truly multipurpose, Vice-Admiral Anatolii Shelmov said. –It can solve all tasks which the state commissions to its special marine forces – hit target under water, on the ground and in the air, he added.

The former high-ranking defence ministry official also said that the construction of the sub has taken long time not only because of insufficient financing, but also because of the special materials used in the vessel.
