German submarine arrives in SA waters

April 07, 2006, 12:45 - SASB News

Mosioua Lekota, the defence minister, says the acquisition of the German-built submarine S101 is designed to rejuvenate and modernise the country's naval capabilities. The submarine has been named Manthatisi, after a renowned Batlokwa chieftainess.

Mosioua was making his welcome speech to the submarine and crew, who arrived this morning, at the Simon's Town Naval Base. Lekota says the three submarines, the other two of which are due to arrive in three years' time, will be used to defend the country's sovereignty and will also be deployed in peacekeeping missions around the coasts of the continent and wherever they are needed.

Mosioua says the arrival of the last two submarines will also enable young South Africans to join the Navy and enhance their military skills.
