It already happened! In 1976, the USS DACE lost the a/c while off Puerto Rico. I believe they were down over 36 hours because Hurricane "David" was raging overhead and they couldn't surface. Many of the crew were in critical condition from the heat when they finally made port.

At the time, my brother was a member of the crew of the DACE.
