Have a look at the deck gun (unfortunately, in an edit the URL goes at the end..) I feel it can be improved upon. However, I want to be sure..
I remember a picture of a beautiful brass VIIc deck gun, but I cannot recall/refind the URL. anybody ?
does anybody have detail photos of the deck gun for me ? (I do have vom Original zum Modell : Uboottyp VII C Deutsche Uboote bis 1945 (D. Miller) and Type VII Uboats (R.C. Stern) )
The new revell model seems inaccurate. - the harnesses to keep the gun personnel from taking a swim look very different on pictures as in the kit. - also, these harnesses were folded back toward the gun if not in use. The revell ones are folded out, suggesting the gun had just been used. But the aiming apparatus is missing (this was attached to the gun when needed and normally kept inside). - In the photos there is also a large circular thing just above the barrel. Possibly another aiming thingy. on the kit it is missing (or not present if this was also detached when not in use. anybody know ?).
I would like some detail about the mount. should there be circular disk on the mount facing forward? The kit's instructions and the u-99 kit have it on there, but not this kit. Also, what did the sides of the breech block (? i mean back end of the gun) look like ?
The brass gun you remember (if it was from the SCR) may be the Gato 5" gun done by Ron Perrot (see picture in gallery pages).
Some additional 88mm gun pictures can be found in: "U-Boats in the Atlantic" (P. Beaver) "U-Boats under the Swastika" (Jak P. Mallmann Showell) "Type VII U-Boat" (Westwood) (basic drawn schematics)
Unfortunately, I don't have a digital camera (maybe after Christmas?). If I get access to one, I can email some pictures at a later date should you still need some additional photos.
I'm a novice builder but...the "ring" you mention on the mount below the gun barrel might be the receptacle for holding the muzzle cover/tampon when the gun is in use.
Andrea Miniatures released a very detailed 1/32 scale 88mm deck gun kit which seems pretty good. I'm building this kit for placement on the deck of an OTW type VII. They also supply a reasonable conning tower kit as well. Prices are a bit high. Search their site for "submarine" to get an idea of the items they offer. Some of the item's pictures are worth viewing for details.
Not at all. The Accurate Armour is in 1/35 scale. The Andrea kit is 1/32 and comes with more detailed castings and more metal components. The Accurate Armour kit was supplied with the OTW Type VII kit so I had both to examine.
