Silent Service VHS Tapes
Submitted by Site Administrator

See pictures below

From out of the depths of 1950s NBC television came a television series called "The Silent Service". Each 30 minute episode covered the adventures of a WWII US submarine patrol based partly on actual patrol events. According to the USS Bowfin Museum, the actual sub used was the USS Sawfish (SS-276) which is seen in detail throughout each episode.

Not long ago, I found out that a tape of 13 episodes had surfaced as was now available from John Clear (sealbtdt@continet.com). I sent him email straight away and put my $25 check in the mail the same day!

These episodes are 30-minute B/W submarine adventures containing both action drama scenes and authentic WWII archieved footage. Although the quality of these episodes isn't fabulous compared to todays standards, it's better than I expected considering that they were recorded well before home video! Although there are parts full of dust/grain, the vast majority of the video is probably close to as it was viewed back in 1957. The average sound quality is pretty good, but has spots of muffled voices as well.

Bottom line - If you liked the original series, or are looking for an entertaining piece of the Golden Age of television, this tape is a must have!
